Last week we ventured out into Nottingham at night twice as a family. The kids got a taste for it, firstly on Wednesday, as we left Hetty Feather at the Theatre Royal behind, and joined the hoards of pirate and pyjama clad student night revellers. Mr G’s eyes were like whiskey glasses.

‘When can I drink rum and run around town dressed like a pirate?’ he asked in the car home.

‘Maybe when you are 18.’ said Mr A.

‘That’s ages!’ said G.

Light Night did mean he got to run around town at night again on Friday, minus rum and costume. Light Night is such great concept, and such an imaginative event. The kids were so excited to be in the city at night.

I was excited about the street food, I had a gorgeous veggie burger and halloumi, then we shared cakes. The rest of the family ate from Mister V’s who was brilliant with kids. Fuelled up, we decided to take in the castle. We were among the first to arrive, although the queues are huge. The lit up castle, free entry and stunning views over the city are a real pull.

We enjoyed a warm drink in the cafe before venturing back into the night. Outside the Robin Hood Statue there was this:

We wandered home via The Lacemarket and caught the end of a parade. There was so much happening all over the city, you would be hard pushed to see it all. We really enjoyed being part of the city at night. It would be amazing to feel that the city was open to more than drunken revellers on a Friday night, especially now the kids are a little older and staying up later.
