Funny Books for Reluctant Readers: The Laugh Out Loud Children’s Book Awards by Scholastic

Funny Books for Reluctant Readers

We were invited to review the shortlist for the Lollies, the Laugh Out Loud Children’s Book Awards. My kids absolutely love books but when it comes to reading themselves, they can be reluctant, so funny ones sounded like a great plan!

There are three age categories in the Lollies, we were sent the the 6-8 list, we loved Thorfinn the Nicest Viking, a really funny way to explore gender stereotypes and family relationships (I secretly loved the non violent Viking boy character too). We are huge fans of Jonny Duddle too, and love that his books are growing up with his readers into chapter books.

Miss L and I had a look at Badly Drawn Beth and Wilf the Mighty Worrier, again fun books for all kids, and especially reluctant readers, who love to have cool characters, humour and pictures interwoven with the text.

You can vote on the shortlist, we did and the kids enjoyed having their say, but I will keep our votes secret, they are all fun books!  You can also buy the books in a bundle for the bargain price of £12.99.

Check out the shortlists for older kids too…I am fascinated to read David Baddiel’s books!
