Bunnies hop in the Oxfordshire greenery, ducks waddle over to say hello, the kids run around and collect conkers, a pair of red kites circle and call out just above us. We’ve arrived at the campsite early and wait excitedly as the finishing touches to our accommodation are prepared. Over the tops of ordinary motorhome roofs we spy an RV quite unlike the others. It’s blue, with go faster stripes and a giant satellite fixed to the roof. The roof rack is loaded with lots of spare fuel tanks.
To celebrate the new Ben 10 episodes airing on Cartoon Network, a replica of Ben 10’s Grandpa Max’s motorhome – fondly nicknamed The Rust Bucket – has been created. We’re lucky to get to spend a night in it. You could too, more info below.
First impressions: it really looks the part, it’s going to be awesome fun and it’s huge. We can’t wait to move in.
Inside, it’s just as you imagine a vintage American RV: huge and with all mod cons. We kind of like the fact it’s just like someone’s Grandpa’s RV and not as flash as the outside. It’s clean and comfortable and there’s loads on board to keep us entertained, which is great as it starts to rain within 30 minutes of arriving.
So we stick on the brand new episodes of Ben 10 on The Rust Bucket’s PS4, I’m struck by how much the characters resemble my two, and how much our Rustbucket feels like Ben’s Grandpa’s.
Next it’s time for Spaghetti Rust Bucket-naise, made with ‘goats beard’ and ‘piranha liver’. It’s delicious and it also happens to be ‘cook with the kids day’ so that’s well timed. If you’ve never grated instead of chopped carrots in spag bol for kids, do try it. For the first time ever Mr G tucks straight in without trying to ask for plain spaghetti.
We dare each other to try pickled gherkins like Ben…luckily we’ve also been given a packet of Oreos to take the taste away.
Then we raid the games cupboard and discover the joy of Ludo, competition is fierce and it’s a nail biting finish for 3rd and 4th place between G and Mr A.
The moon suddenly moving out from behind the clouds and the rain stopping draws us outside for some star gazing.
Suddenly there’s a noise above the van, a strange glow. The moon darts behind a cloud and it gets really spooky. A strange blue light appears in the sky. It looks very much like we’ve got company.
Apologies, the photos get a little hazy at this point…but I think you will agree the lights on the side of the van are kinda creepy.
Mr G is straight in, like Ben, to investigate…that’s the last photo I managed to take, him running towards the strange lights…before…
It’s hero time!
What happened next is crazy and hazy. But, I can confirm that using our ‘Bentution’ we manage to save the universe from alien invasion. Thank goodness we ate those gherkins! I can’t tell you who the new aliens are either. I’m sorry, you’ll have to watch the new Ben 10 episodes on Cartoon Network, on Saturday at 10am.
Then it’s time to tuck up and get some rest, saving the planet is tiring work and no one can quite believe what happened. Not your average bedtime story in the Alexander residence. The Rust Bucket has two beds in the front and a double bedroom in the back.
Kids asleep, and is all quiet on the Rust Bucket front, so we get ready to turn in too. Mr A finds some of Grandpa Max’s clothes in the wardrobe, as if we needed more proof we were really in the Rust Bucket.
Universe saved, and we all slept really well. Do not try this at home, I will probably get told off for this. But, in my defence I grumbled to Mr A we had no photos of me (again) and he insisted we take this shot. I love him for that.
What did we like best about the Rustbucket?
I liked watching the new Ben 10 in the Rustbucket. I liked Ben 10’s cousin Gwen’s character, the van even had a t shirt in the wardrobe like she wears. L aged 10
I liked the star gazing and staying in an American RV, it had so much space. It was a bit of an old Rustbucket just like in Ben 10, but very cool and comfortable still. I kept imagining driving it, it must be crazy to drive it round. Loved the sign on the dashboard ‘Lower Dish Before Driving.’ Mr A aged 41.
The external theme-ing is brilliant, from the go faster stripes to the logo and props on the roof. It really caught people’s interest and imagination on the campsite. Inside it’s an ordinary RV but full of on and off screen entertainment for all the family, spacious and comfortable.
Me, aged 39
I just liked staying in the Rustbucket! I would have liked to stay longer. Maybe next time!? G aged 7.
