Self Catering Resorts, the best of both worlds?

James Villa Holidays Resorts Eden Resort Algarve, Portugal

It’s raining here and I’m dreaming of escaping for some sun and thinking about self catering vs resort. Where do you stand?

We’re massive fans of self catering holidays, villas, cottages, caravans and motorhomes, mainly because when we go away we love the idea of our own space. Holidays for me are about relaxing and retreating into our family unit a little, away from rules and schedules and the rest of the world. Whilst it’s sometimes nice to have someone else do the cooking and cleaning, it’s also lovely to be able to eat when you like, make trips to the local markets and supermarkets and enjoy local foods and even cook up your own feast.

While I’m not a huge resort person, I do relish them from time to time, my kids absolutely love the facilities, a huge pool, the company from time to time of other kids, sports activities and kids’ clubs. I’m reminded that happy kids make happy parents and that as they get older they want more independence and entertainment. Making friends is a brilliant social skill too and a reminder to us grown ups to reach out too!

James Villa Holidays also have resorts which combine the best of both worlds, mixing villas, apartments and town houses into a resort setting to create a laid-back community feel. We’ve stayed previously with James Villas in Malta and absolutely loved Villa Kentia, so I was really interested to see how this self catering resort concept works. Our James Villa was really grand and spacious, yet it was very reasonably priced, it really felt like we were living the high life for our holiday week! The views and the feeling of space and privacy were brilliant, we really enjoyed entertaining friends there for Mr A’s 40th.

Today I’m focussing on Eden Resort in Portugal, which has 4 types of villa, all with a private pool, plus access to all the facilities of the resort. Like our previous experience with James Villas the villas are pretty remarkable. I love the alfresco dining space. I can imagine lots of lazy meals eaten here, my favourite is ‘bits and bobs’, local breads, cheese, salad and fruit washed down with local wine.

There are six pools on the resort, including two children’s pools and with entertainment, perfect for making friends. Kids clubs operate for 4-10 years olds in the morning and afternoon if you fancy a couple of hours with a paperback by the pool or a trip to the resort’s Adam and Eve spa. The sports centre offering tennis, a multi-purpose court and games room.

There is an onsite restaurant, pool bar and bar for lazy days on resort. A mini mart on site and a larger supermarket nearby means cooking up those alfresco meals by the pool is easy too.

Reviews average 9 out of 10 for this resort, worth checking out! Portugal has been on our bucket list since my brother wrote this post about taking his family to Portugal.

Have you stayed in a self catering resort? Or been to Portugal? Let me know your tips!

With a young family we often struggle to find food on the menu that everyone will eat so self catering accommodation sounds like a great solution for us.
