15 Awesome Content Case Studies
Penny has the rare ability to capture the essence of a tale and portray a fabulous story both in words and video. She absolutely rocks!
Susanna Scott, Founder Britmums
As well as offering high quality coverage on my blogs and social channels, I am an inspiring travel writer off the blog – I’ve written for magazines, websites and newspapers. I love film making and presenting too and headed up a Media and Film Studies department in a secondary school before I had children.
I have a Drama and English degree from Hull, an MA in Media from IOE, an OU Diploma in Creative Writing and Certificate in Travel Writing from City University. I’m committed to honing my storytelling skills. Travel, nature, culture and education are particular passions.
As a family we love travelling, learning, getting outside, being in nature, having adventures, being creative, arts and cultural experiences, contemplating history, marvelling at our awesome planet, and sharing the best bits.
Whether you are looking to commission blog coverage, a feature, copy for your website or video, I would love to talk through how we could work together – why not email me?
Here are some of my favourite case studies to whet your appetite, from my 7 years online, on and off the blog:
1. Carnival’s Funnest Family: Video, Blog & Magazine Content
We were chosen to appear in a series of films about a family cruise, made onboard Carnival Sunshine in the Mediterranean and Carnival Breeze in the Caribbean.
I shared our experiences on my previous blog A Residence, my blog coverage was shortlisted in the Caribbean Journalism Awards and I was finalist in the Cruise Awards for Best Cruise Blog.
I was commissioned to write an article in diary style and supply lots of colourful travel pictures for Family Traveller – Caribbean Cruises with Carnival. I also provided snippets from my blog posts for an advertorial piece in Travel Bulletin’s Caribbean magazine.
2. Comic Relief Red Nose Day Launch Campaign: Blogger outreach, live blogging and blogging, radio and features from Ghana, Tanzania and Kenya.
I live blogged from Africa for Comic Relief for three years in a row, with my two colleagues in Team Honk. Our social media awareness campaigning won three blogging awards and our blogger relay, danceathon and Snowdon climb raised over £80,000. You can read about the projects we visited in Kenya with David Walliams here.
Her blogs and social media posts on these trips always give a fascinating insight not just into the projects she’s visited but the country as a whole and the people she has met.
Sophie King, National Media Manager, Comic Relief
I was interviewed by Jane Garvey on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour from Ghana with Comic Relief, and have been interviewed on BBC Radio Nottingham and 5 Live. I also wrote articles for The TES and The Guardian Education.
3. Wayfair: Blog editor
In 2014 online homes and interiors retailer Wayfair were looking for an authentic parent blogging voice and social influencer to work with. They offered to buy my first blog A Residence. For three years I worked as editor, on content ranging from celebrity interviews, to home inspiration and posts commissioned from other expert bloggers. I moved on to focus on family travel when the time seemed right.
This bath bomb post had over 64k shares – not all posts go viral in this way, but the blog successfully raised brand awareness and consumer trust as Wayfair launched in the UK and drove regular new traffic to the site. I loved creating 100 places to have Roald Dahl Inspired Adventures and seeking out ways to inspire happier home lives.
4. Space In Your Case: Website co-editor and creator
Along with writing here, I joined forces with 3 other family and lifestyle bloggers to form Space In Your Case, the family travel inspiration site. Within 8 months we were awarded Best Travel Blog at the Brilliance in Blogging Awards. The site is jam packed with the kind of content search engines and Pinterest love.
5. Hertz: Video Content for Family Traveller online
Hertz commissioned me to create two videos about fun car games for a piece in Family Traveller Fun Car Games to Play with Kids. If you haven’t played Nosy neighbour you must!
6. Electric Vehicle challenge: Blog and Video Content
I put two electric cars through their paces in an Electric Vehicle Challenge feature here on parentshaped. Using a combination of our footage and a film crew we created two video challenges for Go Ultra Low’s channel – the Audi was definitely my favourite of the two cars, although I might take motion sickness tablets next time.
7. James Villas: Blog, Video and magazine content
We absolutely love the video Penny made. Quite a few of the marketing team have seen it and said it epitomises what a family holiday should be.
Sally Pemble, Digital Acquisition Manager, James Villa Holidays
I travelled to Malta with James Villas, providing inspiring blog coverage and video on my blog as well as contributing my insights on visiting Malta with under 5s to Gurgle magazine’s ‘Holiday Hotspots 2016’.
8. Visit Wales: Online Video Advert
Visit Wales commissioned us to appear in an advert for the Dr Who Experience which appeared online and on their site: we also turned my daughter’s wardrobe into a Tardis on A Residence, shared our Top 5 things to do in Cardiff Bay on Space in Your Case and blogged a behind the scenes of our day on parentshaped.
9. Nottingham Post – Newspaper features and column
My local paper The Nottingham Post asked me to write my own feature about my travels to Africa with Comic Relief – which led to a monthly parenting column, often with a nature focus, including How to get your kids to walk further and Pond dipping tips.
She is a skilled writer who has a great knowledge of – and passion for – her subject matter.
David Whitfield, Commissioning Editor, Nottingham Post
10. Britmums: Opinion piece
As an ex teacher I enjoy tackling educational issues and wrote this opinion piece Why I am keeping my children home on May 3rd for Britmums, Britain’s biggest collective of lifestyle bloggers.
11. Hotel Ranga: Features
Star food blogger and friend Emily, from A Mummy Too, invited me take her place on a Gourmet Iceland Press Trip to Hotel Ranga in Iceland. I produced two high quality features on A Mummy Too: A Foodie and Family Friendly Destination and A Gourmet Trip to Iceland and a Stay at Hotel Ranga
12. Mark Warner: Instagram takeover
We reviewed the Levante Resort for Mark Warner, creating a blog post and video from the perspective of each member of the family and taking over Mark Warner’s instagram while we were away – doubling likes on average. One of our images (bottom left) was used in the Mark Warner brochure to launch a social media competition.
13. YHA – Video and blog coverage
This is where my family travel writing all began. With this rather cute little room tour over on Your Tube which has now had over 6k views and was used by the charity on their own website. Just goes to show that online really is for the long haul.
14. Visit Scotland
Our collaboration on an Edinburgh city break went so well I was invited back to fulfil my dream to take a campervan around the highlands and islands. I blogged, vlogged instagrammed, facebooked and tweeted our journey and was commissioned to write this piece for the Visit Scotland blog on my return.
15. Visit England/Northumberland – #OMGB Social and Blog Coverage
This campaign was all about finding the Oh My Great Britain moments. My tweets of Northumberland’s stunning coastline were really popular, but with with 151 likes and 53 retweets this single tweet seemed to really tap into the campaign’s core message – holidays in the UK can be as amazing as travelling abroad!
16. Hotel Touring, Bologna
I bumped into the owner at World Travel Market and was invited to review this amazing hotel with a roof terrace amongst Bologna’s medieval towers, along with a food tour, restaurant and bike tour. Sometimes you have to be patient to see the results of a collaboration. This post suddenly gained momentum in search and it’s lovely to see daily click throughs to my friends at Hotel Touring.
