When you find yourself repeating the word overwhelmed a lot, when your head refuses to take on any more information, and your body feels like all it is doing is encasing a whirring brain about to explode. Know that feeling?
Whittlebury Hall Hotel and Spa invited me, and the Space In Your Case team, to try out their 2 day spa package. Sadly we only made it one night as we all had lots of commitments in the run up to Christmas, but with hindsight I can see how incredibly amazing two nights would be and I really would go back, perhaps with Mr A, to do that. However, I was looking forward to seeing what magic they could work in a day…
The hotel is in Northamptonshire, so perfectly situated for a mix of Southerners and Midlanders. The hotel is in easy reach of the M1 but situated in a lovely rural setting, with one of those long an impressive driveways that always signal you have escaped somewhere wonderful. The hotel was beautifully decked out for Christmas, suddenly the stress of all that prep melted away, and we were left with childish excitement.
So it was time to get our robes on and test out the amazing spa facilities.
The spa is arranged around this gorgeous pool, full of jets and jacuzzis to relax in. My poor shoulders needed a pummelling and my sore legs from lots of running this Winter soon felt soothed.
The Whittlebury Hall Hotel Spa ‘experience’ rooms were wonderful. Steam and Shower rooms with different scents, temperatures and even a disco sauna. Well, not technically, but the gently pulsing green lights and bird song were really soothing.
Our lunch was buffet style, there was a good range of food to choose from so you could go for healthy options or indulge more. Having just been for a run that morning I was feeling virtuous (didn’t last) so I had soup and a plate full of interesting salads – there were enough vegetarian choices to fill my plate. Sadly my favourite, frittata was lacking in flavour, but the rest was good.
The whisper room is a real highlight. Don’t tell Katie, Helen and Alison, but they talk
too so much, (about the most fascinating stuff I should add, whereas me, I am absolutely quiet as a mouse of course, wouldn’t catch me sharing blogger gossip or tips or talking about how tough being a mum can be, NO! ). So, as you can imagine, we didn’t really get to cocoon ourselves enough in the ambient lighting, relaxing water beds, chaise longs and hammocks here for long. But still, it was lovely to look at. Another reason to take a two day break, or arrive sooner!
When I go to a spa I want to indulge not detox, plus we had Space in Your Case’s launch last month to toast, I told you I wasn’t good for long! Yep, Prosecco and Gingerbread muffins. Delicious!
Just in case dear reader, you think at this point I am now enjoying myself too much, I would argue the trouble too with reviewing a spa, is you feel compelled to take your phone with you, to take pictures. Then you end up just having a quick check of email, and then all the people you emailed stuff to on Sunday night in an effort to clear your day on Monday are after you for stuff. Silly mistake. Quick, distract, distract! Jump in this pool now!
This is a photo from Whittlebury’s site, I love the whole Grecian feel to this hotel’s pool and huge jacuzzi and lounging area. It feels really special given it is the hotel swimming pool as well as being part of the spa.
We were really ready for dinner after a lazy day lounging, the dining room was lovely and the service was great. I have a sneaky suspicion the girls enjoyed the meat and fish dishes more than I did the vegetarian options. I’m just not a fan of pasta, pastry and cream, I am sure lots of vegetarians will appreciate what I mean, but there was a choice of options and they were tasty, a million times better than my cooking right now, and I didn’t have to cook them, and we had wine – all a huge bonus in my busy mum book!
We stayed overnight, we needed some extra towels and these appeared in record time. The rooms are being made over and while it was too dark to do justice and take a picture of our room, this is what a newly refurbished room might look like. They were super clean and spacious.
Whittlebury is a very large hotel and conference centre, which on one side perhaps makes it less personal, but the huge advantage is it can offer excellent value and scale in terms of the size and the range of spa facilities. It also doesn’t feel, as it can at some spa only premises, as if you have been ‘institutionalised’ for the day with lots of other people, or that you need to fight for a space to be at peace and relax. There is lots of room to chat, relax by the pool, enjoy a sauna or steam or to sleep.
Whittlebury Hall Hotel Spa offer instant gift tokens, which would be perfect this Christmas, why not book a New Year detox, recovery or treat to see off the January blues?
We had a lovely time at Whittlebury Hall Hotel Spa and it was a real pleasure to get to know my Space in Your Case team mates a lot better.
Disclosure – we received spa day, and overnight stay including lunch, dinner and breakfast.
