Secretly I don’t like Halloween much, it’s daft, but bear with me and read on. My mum always made a fab effort with home made costumes and trick or treating, but I’ve always found it frustrating. Both of mine have been going on and on about trick or treating, which is tricky because our road is rubbish for it, whereas lots of their friends live on friendly cul de sacs where everyone goes mad for it. I should probably just take them to another street. Last year I took them to Malta, and the year before we were on a cruise ship - I’ve been seriously dodging the issue.
But it is more than the logistics, somehow the mix of not living up to what my Mum did and Halloween being about the dead does nothing for me these days. Silly, but it took me a while to realise why I was crying in the shower and to connect the two this morning. Agh. I miss her so much.
So I decided it was time for a new little legacy.
Since we got back from Scotland (lots of lovely posts about Edinburgh to come!) all it has done is rain. And while we need a duvet day, this weather is just depressing now. We had to leave the house today. I saw the The Mummy Diary‘s (much prettier) post about Pumpkin Picking in Nottingham at Maxey’s Farm Shop, and decided that’s what we would do. Get some pumpkins. Thanks Ellie, your post was just what we needed.
Setting foot in a field full of them cheered me immensley and there was something lovely about starting on a new Halloween tradition.
I can’t get over how much he reminds me of my brother here. Must also be the first time in years he has posed for a photo without his tongue or the Vs (peace man Vs not sweary Vs) appearing.
Mr G went for the biggest he could find…
After expressing her bafflement that the pumpkins weren’t growing - I think they were earlier in the week but they ran out and had to top up from another field - L decided she wanted one that was just the right shape and size for the design she has already sketched on paper, with a neat stalk.
Funny how the little things make them smile? Bet they still make me go trick or treating. If you live in Nottingham and fancy a trick or treat visit, let me know.
Then we got our mucky paws on some chocolate cake and other home made goodies in the fabulous Maxey’s farm shop.

I didn’t even know this place existed! We don’t decorate the house or anything for Halloween, we live in a very quiet village that no one visits to do trick or treating. We took the boys out to a cul-de-sac we lived on before the boys were born. They loved it and all the houses were brilliantly decorated. One thing I noticed this year was the pumpkins, everyone went to a lot of effort with them. It’s the first time I’d noticed it. There was one house that had three of them in the window, all with Tinkerbell carved into them! The carving is something the boys want to try out next year.
