How do you know if you’re saving enough for your child?

how to work out if you are saving enough for your child

My thoughts of what my children might, or ‘should’ do when they reach 18 are still very flexible. University is not as affordable as it was when I went. I’ve also seen first hand that while it shaped me and gave me food for thought, thinking and writing skills, an amazing start and the best friends a girl could ask for, there have been other aspects of my life that have really shaped me too. To save for Uni now could cost £44, 500, that’s a lot of debt to get in.

My marriage, to someone who didn’t do university, has had a huge influence. Mr A has always earned more than me, and progressed more rapidly than me. Part of that is down to personality, having kids, being female and younger I am sure, but a large part is down to finding a passion early on, getting experience, determination and taking risks. Living with someone who is self employed and runs their own business has clearly rubbed off on me and so our 19 year old relationship has had a huge impact on my freelance career. Of course you don’t need to be married to reap these benefits, but it was a great start to our team and a day I will never forget. The average UK wedding now costs £8,000.

Getting on the housing ladder early has helped us to realise our dreams to escape to the country and run a self catering place – watch this space, it’s finally happening. Our deposit for our first flat in London was funded by Mr A’s inheritance, and I’ve always felt majorly indebted to family I never got to meet for that. The average house deposit is now £20, 102. A house deposit is an amazing gift to give children, as property seems to be the most reliable way to make your fortune these days.

My travels have always taught me so much about how to appreciate the beauty in life and the differences in cultures. I think my kids have a real taste for that, I hope they are braver than I was as a youngster, but not too daring! A round the world trip could cost between £1,500 and £10,ooo.
