This is the age of over-sharing, we share pretty much anything with pretty much anyone, but I’ve been reflecting and wondering whether I want to share our holidays. As a travel blogger I happily share our trips on the internet, I don’t mean that, I mean do I want to share my accommodation with other holiday makers while I am away? There are advantages to resorts and hotels of course, but when we have a whole holiday house, that’s when we truly relax as a family. Today I am sharing two of may favourite family holiday breakfasts, reflecting on sharing on holiday, and giving away a breakfast hamper thanks to HomeAway.
The morning Petit Déjeuner ritual had to be one of my favourite parts of our recent holiday in France. Flip flops on, padding through the dewy grass, as the sun began to warm up over the lake, off to buy a baguette and French pastries and crepes, a jar of nutella, fresh apricots and juicy nectarines. All eaten together in the morning sunshine as we slowly embraced another day away. There was a huge sense of pride at returning to our holiday home with these still warm beauties…an almost primitive sense of providing the best for my loved ones.
Part of the joy of travelling for me is gathering local treats and living like the locals. Holiday breakfast is especially good when eaten alfresco, but not always, I have happy memories of local eggs and bread bought in the deli next door to our cottage in Norfolk and turned into the most glorious boiled eggs and soldiers as the wind whooshed outside and we prepared for a bracing walk along endless swathes of sand.
A slow and lazy breakfast has to be one of my holiday highlights, a clear signal you are breaking with routine. Don’t get me wrong, I love a buffet, especially on sightseeing trips or short breaks. But self catering means no filling in a breakfast form the night before, no forcing everyone out of bed, no having to get dressed and look respectable, no waiting in line surrounded by hangry people, no worrying your kids are showing you up, no kids leaping up like yo yos to fill another bowl or plate from the buffet, no food waste - is it just mine who help themselves to everything, only to actually manage to eat a spoonful of Rice Krispies and nibble a croissant? No missing breakfast because you overslept and complete control over what is and isn’t on the menu.

Our self catering stay in cottage near Bridport one Christmas where breakfast items had been left for us to use. It was a relief to find when you have children to look after.

Best self-catering breakfast experience on holiday was on our honeymoon driving the Great Ocean Road in Australia. We had been staying in hotels and B&B’s but had a wonderful self contained luxury cottage in the middle of nowhere close to Robe. We decided to pick up some groceries and when we arrived found a full cooked breakfast pack waiting for us. It was the best breakfast sat out on the porch watching the wildlife around us.
We had a lovely hotel room with kitchenette when we stayed in Germany and it was lovely to wake up to hubby making bacon sandwhiches.

Cake and coffee - two of my favourite things - for breakfast in the Greek Islands. I never worked out whether they did it just for tourists or whether that’s what they ate themselves but I thoroughly enjoyed starting the day on cake!
ive got to say edinburghs novotel in the edinburgh business parks breakfast if fantastic. Your own coffee freshly brewed various pastries,loads of cereals and cooked breakfast in great surroundings.

What a fab prize - I love breakfast! Best self catering breakfast/brunch was every day in Devon. Waffles with clotted cream and jam!
Mine has to be in a self catering lodge in Center Parcs. Great equipped kitchen and a shop within the complex so you can cook whatever you like. There are also restaurants and cafes around so if you don’t want to cook every night then you can treat yourself to dinner out!
After a great day and night at a whisky distillery on the island of Islay we had and amazing breakfast the next morning at our B and B. Free range eggs from the garden, Buck’s Fizz, homemade bread and jams and locally sourced sausages. Amazing and we spent about 2hrs at the breakfast table!
I love the all you can eat breakfasts from Table Table, the kids get to eat free and we can enjoy a mixture of full English and continental breakfast.

I stayed in a real dive in Durham once, and when I went to breakfast it was amazing. Delicious full English and I’m embarrassed to say that was washed down with a Continental!

Don’t tend to do self catering. As I do like my food and being treated. Remember going away for holiday camping with members of church. Staff used catering sized pots for our porridge, we had to take our own crockery and cutlery for the camping experience, luckily had a cookhouse.

My best experience was when a massive group of us went camping, and we made a cooked breakfast in a firepit!! It was amazing, although we burnt the toast as we were toating it on a stick of wood!! I loved every minute of it, was a great laugh and best of all shared between all our friends 🙂

We stayed at Summerfield Suites in Florida and there was a restaurant opposite where everything from eggs, pancakes and cereals to steak and ham was served for breakfast. It literally had any food you could wish for.

At home when my husband is off work and the kids off school we actually have time to have a proper family breakfast. He makes the best homemade pancakes ever, the kids love to decorate them with Nutella, bananas, maple syrup and sometime even smarties.
We parked overnight in a free motorhome space in a village square in a tiny French village. The fountain next to us kept us awake all night. In the morning staggered out of the van to find a glorious smell of baking bread wafting across the road. Rushed over there to buy croissants and a baguette for breakfast. They were still warm and with French butter and jam, they were a breakfast fit for a king!

On holiday in America it was a lot of breakfasts out, but one morning we stopped at a farm shop and had the most delicious, juicy blueberries and chocolate coffee cake (to be had with coffee, not flavoured with it!). It wasn’t the healthiest, but oh my lordy, so delish!
One morning, while on holiday in Spain, going to the local bakery for rolls & cakes, bringing it back to the apartment and then sharing it with a lovely couple who’d just arrived after their flight had been delayed! 😀
Travelling the States, one of the places I stayed at provided a waffle maker for guests to use. I’d never made waffles before, so it was fun working with the waffle mix and using the appliance. Warm waffles in the morning lavished with maple syrup. Mmm! Not the healthiest or most nutritious breakfast to enjoy, but very nice all the same 🙂
My mum made us tuna on toast for breakfast in greece. She used to take food in her suitcase as she didn’t want to pay expensive resort prices. I always enjoyed this! So delicious and it kept us full until lunch!
We take our caravan away in the summer and wake up with view of the sea and lighthouse. A fantastic breakfast treat is sitting outside cooking bacon and eggs in the open air with fresh bread & croissants from the local bakery.
One of the best family breakfasts I recall was eaten outdoors in the garden of a Suffolk cottage we were staying at. It stood alone in the centre of an acre of land and all we could hear was the sounds of nature. Bliss.

We rented a cottage in Cornwall last year. It was wonderful as was part of a farm. The farmer used to leave us fresh ingredients for an English breakfast on our doorstep every couple of days. Was the tastiest breakfast we had ever tasted especially the eggs!
A holiday cottage in Mull. Not only did it come with an antiquated landrover, (You left your roadworthy car at the end of the track and took this trashed monster up and down to the cottage. We can’t have been insured - things were different in the 80s.) THERE WAS A DONKEY IN THE GARDEN. “What bliss it was that dawn to be alive but to be young was very heaven!”
We stayed self catering in an idyllic cottage right on the banks of Cowlands creek as it meets the sea in Cornwall. We had 270 degrees of the water and national forest on the other aspect so it was totally unspoilt; eating outside in our Indian Summer listening to the gentle movement of the tidal creek was amazing. At night the sky was so clear looking at star constellations was like nothing we had witnessed before as they are invisible to us at home in our urban home. A place we will always remember.
Walking the West Highland Way with my daughter, our breakfast of sausages on the last day, gave us the strength to climb out of Kinlochleven and walk the sixteen miles into Fort William.

Any breakfast in sunshine suits me, Algarve, Majorca, Barbados in my pjs early morning sun, what’s not to love!
Staying in a chalet in Norfolk, close to the beach, our 12 year old son got up early and collected fresh cockles from the beach. We popped them into a huge free range egg omelette with samphire. Served with toast, enough for the whole family. A magic memory.
I love the freedom to have anything you like for breakfast - whether that be cake or a fry-up! 🙂
The smell of bacon frying while we were camping in Anglesey last year was something that made me feel really good and the fact that hubby cooked it was even better !

UK is no wonder a country that has amazed me to bits with its culture,people,scenic beauty and lovely weather.Out of all the lovely places that I have visited in the UK my best experience has been in The Esplanade Hotel, in Newquay, Cornwall. Amazing self-catering holiday breakfast and stay. With hot English breakfast, Fresh fruits and juices,toasts, tea/coffee,sea side view.Can’t ask anything more for a holiday.The environment was very cosy and comfortable and Breakfast being the first and most important meal of the day.If a self catering hotel like that impresses you then your entire day goes well and makes you want to come back again and again and it becomes an example for every hotel you want to go to.

My favorite holiday food experience was eating eating a baby potato, eggs, sour cream creation called “bucket of Spuds” in a cozy brunch place called Penny Cluse in Burlington, Vermont USA!

I went to the algarve and will always remember having black coffee, croissant and an orange sitting on the balcony looking out at the sea
I remember sitting up in bed in the little cottage at Trebarwith Strand and watching the huge waves crashing on the shore and then the door opened and my son brought in some cereal and toast on a tray for me. “Happy Mother’s Day” he said proudly.

Last year we rented a villa in Malta which had a lovely outdoor space. We also got married on the holiday and on the morning of our wedding (as we didnt spend the night before apart) Me, the hubby and the two kids decided to have a picnic breakfast on the garden. We bought pastries the day before from the local shop, apple juice, toast & jam, breakfast quiche and local maltese biscuits. It was amazing and it was our last meal all together before I married my husband and the father of my children so it will forever hold a very special place in my heart.
It would be porridge with a sprinkling of brown sugar and a hot cup of tea, sat in my camping chair admiring the sunrise in Upper Booth in the Peak District.

We have only ever holidayed in the UK, so nothing exotic - but without doubt my best self-catering breakfast experience on holiday was when I was 11 and we went to the Peak District. We stayed on a smallholding, and for breakfast we had Kellogg’s Variety Pack cereal (what is it about those things, cereal is exactly the same but that was always one of the highlights of my holiday!) with fresh milk from their cows, and I got to collect the eggs from the chickens which I then had boiled!
I’m so with you France and its boulangerie visits for glorious treats has to be the best possible way to experience breakfasts
Myself and my partner love going to Hemsby in the UK and when we went there last year he made breakfast for the first time in 6 years, was a special moment.

We had a lovely family holiday in the Algarve a few years ago. We were lucky enough to have our own villa overlooking the ocean.
The weather was beautiful, as were the views and every morning we’d all get together around the dining table or the table on the balcony and eat together while taking in the stunning scenery. It’s the place my husband proposed to me too so the memories are extra special.
In Florida at a villa eating breakfast outside at the pool with family which overlooked a lake we watched the ducks and wildlife in the sunshine. Fresh eggs, coffee and orange juice cooked by my husband.
It does not get much better than that. Amazing start to our day.

In Cornwall we had a lodge and the patio looked out over the bay and sea - Mainly a BBQ breakfast 🙂

Mine has to be a holiday we had in a caravan in Wales. There were 4 lots of families in seperate caravans, we decided to do a breakfast dinner date style thing each day (Each person had to provide breakfast on a particular day) I have never eaten so many sausages!! In particular on one of the days we had a sausage omelette! it was lovely! Highly recommended! And, the lack of washing up on 3 of the 4 days was bliss!
I have never had a self catering holiday experience but I do love hotels buffet breakfasts where I have a cooked breakfast followed by coffee and pastries

My best self catering breakfast was at Millbrook Cottages in Devon. We ordered our shopping and it was unpacked before we arrived. The smell of bread baking greeted us. In the mornings, chickens appeared at the kitchen window waiting for our crumbs. Can’t beat fresh bread and tea of a morning.
A self-catering rental on a farm in Guernsey. We went to the main house for all fresh dairy produce, milk, butter, cheese and eggs. The farmer’s wife also sold her freshly baked bread. Superb holiday breakfasts.
After arriving late to a holiday cottage, we were about to go out the 24 hours garage to buy things for breakfast. My husband spotted a hamper of food essentials from the owner and even a pint of milk in the fridge. A wonderful surprise and a great breakfast the next morning!
Last year while we were camping - the campsite was on a working farm and after we’d been chatting with the farmers the previous evening they brought us some freshly laid eggs over and a loaf of the freshest most delicious bread I’ve ever tasted.

Having dinner on the first night of our honeymoon we decided to pretend we had been married for years when, opening my handbag confetti fell out! Everyone cheered and bought us a bottle of champagne!
One winter by boyfriend and I hired a narrowboat on the fens and I remember cooking bacon and eggs as we sailed along. Eating outdoors always makes food taste amazing and the cold definitely helped us work up an appetite.
My favourite memory is from my childhood on holiday in Spain. We used to collect croissants and cold chocolate milk from the local shop. So delicious!
Me and my Mum went away for a girlie weekend in Brighton to celebrate her turning the big 5 0! The chef in our B & B made the most amazing eggs benedict which was divine. Even better was that this was included ontop of the normal continental breakfast luxuries 🙂 x
My favourite breakfast was when we stayed in a caravan in France and my husband went to buy fresh croissants every morning for us to eat for breakfast, with lashings of jam. So yummy!
Friends invited us to their holiday home in Tenerife. My kids were looking forward to churros for breakfast. Turned out our friend’s holiday home was a timeshare in a horribly built up resort, where the only breakfast on the menu in any of the cafes was a full English. I drove out of the resort, took a back road and found a small grocery store, where I bought a packet of churro ready mix, a tub of Paladin thick hot chocolate, milk and oil for frying. We made churros and chocolate ourselves, the churros were misshapen and the chocolate a bit lumpy but the kids (& adults) all enjoyed having an authentic Spanish breakfast, and we made them every day after that.
We took a breakfast picnic to the local “beauty spot” kids loved it!
Ours would probably be making our own breakfast whilst staying in a chalet at the beautiful country side in South West France, kids playing outside in the huge garden whilst us two sit and enjoy croissants and coffee ❤️

We were on holiday in France and bought croissants from a local bakery and had them with a nut spread we had bought from a market. Gorgeous.

A group of us went to Macedonia and rented out a large house - we then took turns to cook each other meals from our home countries. It was lovely 🙂
Newquay by the sea, it was absolutely amazing. Caught my own fish and cooked them on the BBQ.
As a mum of 2 - I often find I have no choice but to share as it doesn’t take long before my two ask if they can bits of my breakfast (or take bits off my plate) so it can disappear before it gets to my mouth LOL Don’t they know I need it for energy to keep up with them. (I do draw the line on chocolate so I find that hard to share so have to hide to eat those LOL)

Northern Brittany last October renting a Gite from NOVASOL was brilliant. The place is like visiting Cornwall but slightly nicer weather, the people are wonderfully friendly and the food, yummy! certainly recommend a look 🙂
I just loved making breakfast whilst camping beside a river in North Wales.
Nothing better than having breakfast over a open fire while camping.The atmosphere together with the aromas and the fresh air make it magical……….

We always go self catering (as we have 4 children and it’s the best option for us) and we usually go somewhere Mediterranean, so breakfasts are always a yummy combination of different pastries, scrambled egg on toast, bacon, fresh orange juice and lovely strong coffee. Add that to the sunshine & the tiled terrace looking out across the infinity pool to the sea beyond and it’s a perfect brekkie combo!

We often go on holiday the self catering way. We always have a good breakfast to set us up. We stayed in converted stables one February and made a whole load of pancakes while the kids made snowmen outside.

I love having breakfast with my friends each morning when we do our annual caravan break in the UK. We always have cooked breakfast or go and get freshly baked baguettes ready for the bacon. Sometimes its just the good company that make a great breakfast.
A holiday in Devon in the mid 90s.
We bought the bacon, sausage, eggs and mushrooms all from different farm shops within 10 miles of Paignton and cooked it using a portable stove!

We went to Menorca 2 years ago, and went to a local cafe for breakfast. It was the biggest full english I have ever seen!! It was the best breakfast ever and served in such an usassuming off the main road little cafe, you would never have expected it!

My old school friends and I have rented a cottage in wales for our friends wedding. We ordered an online shop and had a mix of continental and full English for the grown ups and children to choose from. It was September and the weather was perfect we ate in the sunshine on the decking area! Bliss!
My best experience is when I have been away with my parents and my Mum has cooked us a gorgeous Full English breakfast, complete with hashbrowns, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, sausages and toast!
My best experience was enjoyed on a self-catering holiday to the Aveyron Region in France with my family - cooking our own marinated steaks and sausage on a little barbecue provided by the property owners.
we love self catering holidays, the choices are amazing and it means we can eat whenever we like. My children are picky eaters so its awesome to be able to cater to their needs

When I was younger we stayed in a farm house. The lady had a beautiful family and a beautiful farm.
Every morning she would take us down to the bails of hay and let us go wild across the bails finding egg it was brilliant fun! Then we would put them in buckets to check if they were good or bad eggs. Then we would go back to the house and she would leave everything for us and she aould go back out to the farm and carry her day on.
She had a beautiful old big kitchen and

She would pop in every nown and again and make sure we had everything we needed.
It was the most beautiful time I had ever had. X

My best self catering breakfast experience was when I won a holiday to centre parks with my children and we ate breakfast alfresco cooked ourselves on a bbq on our garden patio feeling all at one with nature all around us, a far cry from our usual city lifestyle.
Last year I hired a cottage in Ireland and invited all my American family over. I have fond memories of cooking a full Irish Breakfast for them all and seeing then try and understand why we cook so many strange things in the breakfast such as Black and White pudding.
